Fishing Guide in Ipswich

The Ipswich River estuary is a maze of channels, grass banks, and sandy points that hold fish from May through October. I run my skiff through these shallows targeting striped bass on the flood tide when they push into the marsh to feed on silversides and crabs. The water here is cleaner than Boston Harbor, and sight fishing opportunities open up on calm mornings when you can watch bass tailing in two feet of water. Bluefish show up mid-summer in the outer channels and around Castle Neck, and they'll destroy a popper or streamer without hesitation.

Early season in Ipswich means schoolie stripers in the back creeks, and by June we're seeing better fish in the 24 to 32 inch range working the drop-offs and current seams. July and August bring bluefish into the mix, and the action gets aggressive. Fall is when false albacore show up along the barrier beaches and outer bars, usually late August into October, and we'll chase them on the fly when conditions allow. Black bass fishing is available in some of the freshwater ponds nearby if you want to mix it up on a calm day.

A charter out of Ipswich is about reading the tide, staying mobile, and putting you on fish in skinny water or along structure depending on what's biting. I keep the groups small so you get plenty of casting time, and we adjust based on wind, tide, and what the fish are doing that day. It's technical fishing in beautiful water, and when it comes together you're stripping line on a strong fish with nothing but salt marsh around you.
